When we focus on belonging, a fundamental human need, companies benefit tremendously. A 2019 study by BetterUp found that workplace belonging can lead to an estimated 56 percent increase in job performance, a 50 percent reduction in turnover risk, and a 75 percent decrease in employee sick days. For a 10,000-person company, this would result in annual savings of more than $52M.

These courses are designed to create long-lasting, sustainable improvement to workplace culture. Instead of having team members either take an online training course or hiring a consultant when there are toxic issues within an organization, we train someone on your team. Having a capable staff member trained as a facilitator can help organizations proactively avoid crises by curbing defensiveness and engaging in productive discussions before a situation escalates.

Coursework & Material

These virtual courses involve online training, group exercises, at-home study and virtual discussion groups. They will prepare you to change the behavior at your workplace, lead discussions on fairness and belonging, and to intervene when conflicts arise in a group setting.

There are four levels to the complete course, starting with Facilitation 1:The Science of Belonging & Behavior and moving to the advanced course, Facilitation 4: A Sustainable Culture of Belonging. Participants who complete all four levels and pass a final exam will receive a Facilitation Certificate from Headway.

Pricing & Schedule (all courses)
Each course* is six weeks long and requires five to seven hours of work each week. Participants attend one online group class weekly. Every session includes a lecture, discussion and interactive exercises for participants to practice their new skills. We provide some homework (readings, videos, etc.) after each session for individual study.

Each course (1 through 4) costs $850 per attendee. Please indicate if you are part of a non-profit organization for reduced pricing.

*Once you complete Facilitation Level 1, you will be invited to enroll in Level 2 and so on through Level 4. Read more about Level 1 below, where you’ll also find a link to descriptions of Levels 2 through 4.

Facilitation Training 1: The Science of Belonging & Behavior

This entry-level course is for everyone who wants to learn the Headway approach to healthy workplace culture. Learn about defensiveness–how to recognize it and how to prevent it from influencing behavior— as well as practical strategies for interrupting bigotry without escalating conflict. We’ll tackle dealing with inappropriate jokes, and when it’s appropriate to call out someone who is behaving in a discriminatory manner.

We’ll provide techniques backed by science and evidence that can move your organization toward progress.

We design a program that features workshops and interventions customized to the needs of your organization. This includes at least one workshop organized around a specific module, an employee survey, the analysis of survey responses, and two conference calls to discuss workshop content and structure, the outcomes the client is seeking and what Headway recommends.

Course work & material

The individualized program for your organization may include scientific staff surveys to ascertain the most significant areas related to fairness and belonging that should be addressed. All survey results are anonymous and the analysis is provided to the client, along with a plain-language summary.

With the guidance of Headway’s experts, organizations choose the module that’s most relevant to their team. Each module involves a workshop of 2-3 hours and Headway will provide supplemental materials for further reading and practice exercises for the group. Pricing & schedule

The base fee for workplace interventions is $1500. This includes an initial one-hour consult with leadership to determine objectives and tailoring needs; any tailoring necessary for your organization’s context; and after the course, a one-hour follow-up to assess progress.  Each session is designed for a maximum of 12 participants, to ensure everyone gets plenty of time for interactive, guided practice. A typical module takes about three hours to deliver, including learning, Q&A, interactive practice, and reaching consensus on meaningful metrics for the organization to track. Each module is priced at $5,000. 

For example, if your organization opts to hold a workshop  on microaggressions and inclusive meetings, your price for each set of 12 learners would be:

  • $1500= base fee
  • $5000 x 2 modules
  • $11,500 = total cost

Clients choose a training session from a number of modules (listed below). We start with an initial discussion, so leadership understands what makes Headway’s approach unique. We’ll also discuss what evidence supports the techniques we teach, and how our program can add value to the organization. Each 60-90 minute session includes time for leaders to practice new skills through exercises and demonstrations.

Our editors review content and provide an additional, authentic perspective based on their lived experience or deep familiarity with the culture or community represented in the text.

A cultural context assessment invites a professional journalist with first-hand knowledge of a culture or community to assess how our stories acknowledge differences in behavior, appearance and values.

Journalists across all types of media may report on stories about cultures that are different from those they are immersed in. Relevant assumptions often go unacknowledged and remain hidden, even from ourselves.

When covering a different culture or community, it’s important to explore and examine those assumptions. It’s often equally important to allow someone who is part of that community to help us recognize when we get the story wrong. Perhaps we unwittingly framed it inaccurately, or portrayed characters without full acknowledgement and understanding of their socioeconomic background, culture or context.
